World Meningitis Day 2010

Dedicated to my beloved sister, Sylvia, age 30.

Today is World Meningitis Day! This great event is promoted by the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO). It is the second annual World Meningitis Day, in order to raise global awareness of this widespread and often devastating condition, help prevent future meningitis cases and improve support for those dealing with meningitis-related after-effects.

Meningitis is a potentially fatal inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord and can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. While viral meningitis is generally a mild condition, bacterial meningitis can be life-threatening, even in previously healthy individuals, and can also be associated with septicaemia, a serious infection of the bloodstream, which also struck my sister on her last days T.T

Survivors of meningitis and septicaemia can be left with life-long disabilities including brain damage, limb loss, blindness, and deafness. Although people of all ages can get meningitis, infants, children, and adolescents are at an increased risk. Therefore, it is important to stay alert to early warning symptoms and to be aware of the various types of meningitis because each requires a different vaccine and can affect you at a different age. The outlook often depends on how soon antibiotics are given after the illness starts. Most people make a good recovery if treated early enough. Without treatment, most people will die. Please do take note that safe and effective vaccination is critically important to prevent this deadly disease and its life-changing after-effects.

P.S. Happy 32nd birthday on May 3rd, my sista! I hope you'll always be happy where you are now ^^
